Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China by Jung Chang
3.0
This book is an interesting analysis of Cixi and probably the most sympathetic biography of her which has been written. However because it’s so sympathetic, I felt as though it was biased in her direction. After reading this book, I feel inclined to read another biography of Cixi which is hopefully more critical, so that I can put all parts of her life in better perspective. Despite the engaging writing style, I would give this book 3.5 stars because of the bias towards painting Cixi is a more positive light.
