The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans
0.5

What an annoying story, the back cover is deceptively vague on the vein that this story takes. It is a story about a girl, her horse and a horse expert yes. However, the story also has several disturbing veins mostly centred around adultery that ruin the entire atmosphere of what should have been a heart warming tale.

Annie is a hard character to connect with when her scratching post is her unassuming, supportive husband and her earlier determination to help her child is completely undermined when she is willing to risk destroying her family for a love fling.

Diane may have preferred Tom as a husband, however that is not whom she married, why the author chose to further continue her lustrous designs on Tom I cannot fathom. Her cattiness and jealousy tainted the strong relationship between the two brothers unnecessarily, I feel.

As a result I ended up hating several of the main characters, I hated Annie and her selfishness, I hated Tom, I hated them all. The worst culprit is the ending where not only does Tom inexplicably commit suicide in front of an already emotionally scarred little girl but Robert, forever the sheep, is willing to accept what is potentially a product of his wife's liaisons with Tom.

I did skip a few pages and finished the book annoyed at what started out as a story with great potential.
