The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta

5.0

The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta is a beautifuly written verse novel that explores the complicated and intricate journey of understanding identity.

"When it's time to go onstage,
know that you're not ready but
this is not about being ready,
it's not even about being fierce,
or fearless, it's about being free."

It is a fresh new look at a coming of age story from early childhood into the early 20s of a young mixed gay man. Who not only struggles to understand his queer identity but also his racial identity. Through the art of drag, literature, and friendships Mike slowly beings to understand what it means for him to exist.

The novel is perfectly paced and has a  beautiful journey.

Also it is fierce all hell.
