Superman/Wonder Woman, Volume 1: Power Couple by Charles Soule
5.0
Gosh, this was so great. I was extremely wary going in. Superman's solo book has been garbage. The Justice League book, while good, hasn't done anything spectacular for this duo. But this? Oh it's excellent. I should have known that they were in good hands with Charles Soule after what he did with Swamp Thing, but seriously. This is epic and they are such great characters.
Sure, the action is there with the Olympians and Zod and all, but it's Clark and Diana at the core who really make it worth reading. They're flirty and cool and powerful and sexy and all of these great things that just draw you to them, which is kinda the point. They're Superman and Wonder Woman. Everyone should want to be them or be with them. There are even some nice moments with Bruce that flash by that are the first real glimpse at the "Trinity" that I've seen in the New 52. At least where there's a level of mutual respect and almost friendliness.
There were a couple of lines that I remember cringing at because they were weird of awkward, but nothing too bad. And when it's balanced out with things like Superman telling Wonder Woman "I love you" only for her to reply with "Of course you do," there is a lot that can be forgiven. I also didn't even really mind Zod as the villain, even though his story is SO played out at this point. For real, find a new damn planet to terraform or whatever. Jeez.
On top of all that, the art is spectacular. I don't remember reading much with Tony Daniel in the past, but I'm pretty sure he is now one of the artists that I'll read anything he draws. The pages and the characters are simply stunning. Page after page, I just wanted to stare at them and soak it all in.
Definitely pick this one up. I'm already super excited for volume 2. And on top of everything else, how adorable is it that they called this Power Couple?!
