Maddie and her friends have planned a secret sleepover at her grandparents vacation condo, but when her friends can't make it, Maddie decides to go anyway. When she wakes up the next morning and turns on her phone, she finds several frantic texts from her divorced parents and the town is deserted after an evacuation. The first few days she works on getting things in order for her families' returns, but days turn to weeks and the power goes out. Maddie finds the neighbor's dog and they quickly become companions. As the weeks turn to months these two continue to keep each other company while Maddie builds stockpiles of supplies from other houses and the local markets. The two face looters from other areas as well as wildlife working its way to town.
Written in verse, this is a different take on a dystopian style survival novel, but one that equally pulls a reader in as a high action one would. Maddie is a strong young lady who is determined to survive. I didn't like how time started to seem to speed up as the book continued, but overall a well done story.
