Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar

This was a pain to read.
To quote the author: “‘Ugh,’ she thought, ‘get on with it.’

I want to begin that I do love the Indian setting this book has. I can not say if the representation is done well, since I am not Indian, but it was refreshing to have a book with a setting like this.
I did have hopes for this being a good book. Magical competition? Sign me up. What we got however, was a book full of proza about stars, lots and lots of useless descriptions and mostly 400 pages of blabbering without anything happening.

At one point a character says they value characterisation and descriptions in their stories. There is no lack of descriptions but coherence in those descriptions and the story in general is far gone.
As far as characterisation goes; Sheetal annoyed me into my grave and the rest of the characters didn’t have a personality. Still I would have rather read about Minal and Padmini or Prinyanka any time.

Not my book and I’m glad it’s a stand alone.
