How do you begin reviewing something like this? How on earth do I ever approach another high fantasy book now that I've completed The Realm of the Elderlings? Robin Hobb has pulled off something utterly remarkable, crafting a 16 book 4 million word epic saga with a world so well realized, whose every character is compelling and has a realistic (often heartbreaking) arc, whose every story arc and plot point pays off and shapes the others... Oh right, and all of this with just EXQUISITE prose.
These are all slow burns, but I have never read anything this ambitious that has been so worth the journey. What a book, what a series. An absolute masterpiece.
