I feel like this is an important read, but the writing style really takes some getting used to. We are firmly in J's head, bouncing around much like they do. It is also written in verse, which makes it slightly difficult to get a feel for any of the characters outside of J's thoughts.
However, the content is important for middle grade readers. I'm just not sure how many of them will actually pick it up because of the form of the writing. I'd be curious to hear thoughts from a middle school reader about this book. All in all, if you like novels in verse about identity exploration, definitely check this one out!
