If I had to retitle this book, it wouldn't be Frostbite. It would be Cringe Attack, because there were so many moments of secondhand embarrassment, I practically had to read through my fingers. And yet...I devoured it in four hours.
Frostbite raises the stakes in all the right ways. The plot is faster, the threats more intense, and Rose finally starts maturing into the protector we know she is destined to be. Her character development in this book is strong. She's still impulsive and firey, but there's a new weight to her choices that makes her arc hit harder.
The real standout for me was the storyline with Rose and her mother. That emotional tension built so well over the course of the book and when it hit, it hit. I cried. Add to that the heartbreak of Rose finally accepting that she and Dimitri can't be together, and you've got a surprisingly heavy emotional punch for a book I frequently called "cringe city."
The tone definitely darkens in this one, but Mead handles it well. It never feels heavy-handed or out of place--just more serious, more dangerous, and more real. The humor is still there when it needs to be, and the pacing never lets up.
I'm already into Book 3 and fully hooked. Highly recommend this one if you liked Vampire Academy. The series just keeps getting better.
