House of Chains by Steven Erikson

The middle third of this really dragged. Kalams storyline in particular was just... boring. Unfortunately, the marines also really struggled to grab my attention. The usual problems apply there. Generic dialogue, random names like bottle and smiles, and very slightly differentiated personalities. It's just hard to get invested in those storylines when half of the characters are indistinguishable, but the author acts like they aren't.

Karsa is the problematic fave, and most of the new additions otherwise are cool. The last 200 pages in particular are awesome, as is the Karsa-focused beginning. It's just sad. Not much happens in the middle of this book. The momentum that Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice built up really lagged here.

Still enjoyable, but it's one that you half to get through in some parts. I remember loving Midnight Tides, but I'm honestly scared for The Bonehunters now. We will see.
