i didn’t expect to like, let alone love, this book. the beginning felt very preachy and i didn’t love the characters enough to think about the messages deeply — i think i instinctively pushed back against what i assumed would be “outdated” conceptions about women’s role in society + the home (and there ARE plenty of outdated ideas). but as i got further, i began to appreciate that it was unwavering in the strength and personalities of its characters, even though they exist in a Society that i couldn’t dream to live in. idk, its just cool how much still resonates even though how women exist today is unrecognizably different from the lives they led when this book was written.
