A Good Cry: What We Learn from Tears and Laughter
by Nikki Giovanni
reflective
First time reading poetry... ever? It's always intimidated me, but I'm glad this was the first! I paired this with the audiobook, and it made the experience so much better. Hearing Giovanni read her work and also give some context to some of her poems brought the book to life. I'm glad that this was my introduction to her as the work gives a more intimate look at her life. These are beautiful poems dedicated to different people in her life, her grandparents, Maya Angelou. There were some verses on the need to cry, the importance of art, and friendship that will stick with me. Looking forward to reading her other work in the future!
