I was late to the game with the Accidental Love Series, but quickly fell in love with the Bertha Boys when I read the first four last month. The series had been on my radar for a while, but the reveal of this stunning cover was the push I needed to get started.
I was really excited to get to Xander and Derek’s story, and even more thrilled to receive an ARC copy.
I went in with no real expectation for how the story would unfold, and could not have loved it more.
On top of his medical anxiety that we saw glimpses of in the previous books, Xander’s past trauma has him worried that his friends will leave him now that they’ve all found love. He’s in a rough place at the beginning of the book, and my heart was breaking for him.
I feel like everything was handled so well in this book. Xander’s mental health issues were portrayed with care, and his healing journey was one that really fit his character. There were times that his actions made me want to shake him a little bit, but being in his head really helped to make clear why he was acting the way he was.
We finally get to see more of Derek in this book, and we can see how deeply he cares for Xander. He is trying to navigate what it means to develop feelings for a patient, while also really struggling with how to ensure Xander gets the help he really needs.
Their journey isn’t necessarily a smooth one, but it was absolutely what they needed. Xander’s mental health struggles were handled with the utmost care, and I really appreciated that the complexity of the forbidden nature of thejr relationship wasn’t just glossed over or ignored.
Xander and Derek’s story is full of emotional moments, some sweet and silly ones to balance it out, and some excellent spicy scenes as well!
If you haven’t read this series yet, get started now! And if you have, run, because Xander and Derek’s story is out now!
