If You Come Softly: Twentieth Anniversary Edition
by Jacqueline Woodson
If You Come Softly tells a story of first love, and heartbreak. The author states it’s a Romeo and Juliet retelling about an interracial relationship.
When I first began reading this book I was unsure of the direction of where the book was going. Then I noticed the subtle hints and everything came together at the end creating a heartbreaking conclusion. It was so abrupt and it caught me off guard.
I enjoyed the straightforward and simplistic writing style of this book it gave it such a timeless feel. This book was written twenty years ago but the issues addressed within it are still relevant to this day. Despite this being such a short book it was very impactful in its message.
