Thank you Simon and Schuster for the Advanced Readers Copy to read and review!

Duel is a graphic novel about two young girls learning to get along and cope with their grief after their father's death through their love of fencing. This story honestly caught me by surprise at how complex the characters are and how well written the character relationships were.

Lucy and Gigi are two complex and passionate girls who have their individual struggles and stories, and in the struggle of dealing with the loss of a parent they have isolated each other more than every before. The two cannot seem to interact in a positive way anymore and it takes a lot for them to see over their own struggles into each others. The girls individual perspectives has you rooting for each and thinking further about their perceptions and decisions. As a reader it becomes easy to fall into the story needing to know what happens next. I read this in just over a day!

I personally love graphic novels and how easy and fun they are to read. Duel has a deep and personal storytelling while also being relatable and captivating for the reader. It is easy to tell how much of themselves the authors put into Duel because of how deep it is in a way just anyone cannot do. The way each girl was written in their maturity, innocence, and grief was so well done that it invests the reader so much so that it made me emotional at parts.
Another thing I loved was how the plot was executed through the lens of fencing and how to story arc was portrayed through the arc of a fencing match. I found this to be an interesting and engaging way to portray character relationships and symbolize where the characters are in the story.

I would highly recommend Duel for anyone looking for a quick yet impactful read!
