The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
This is a beautiful novella. The plot is simple: Shai, a Forger (someone who can craft the essence of something and transmute something else into it), is awaiting execution when she is offered a plea bargain: forge the Emperor's soul and place it in his body, as the Emperor is not himself following an assassination attempt.
Over the next 100 days, we get to know Shai, one of her captors, the elderly Gaotona, and through written accounts of his life and conversations with Gaotona, the Emperor.
I will not spoil the ending, but this novella is just the right length to let us get to know the characters, feel for them, and see the outcome of their machinations. A lovely read that I highly recommend.
