Growing Up African in Australia by Maxine Beneba Clarke

challenging emotional informative slow-paced

3.5

Incredibly informative. I'm not usually one for essay collections but I think the sheer diversity of stories included prevented this from becoming repetitive. My two favourites would have to be the one by the gay imam and the one who's grandfather was a Somali poet, I had no idea that poetry was so huge in Somalia!

I think this book did such a good job of showing that African Australians are so not homogeneous/a monolith? Like just how there is every kind of person amongst white people in Australia, there is also every kind of person amongst African people in Australia - rich people, poor people, refugees, skilled migrants, gay people, straight people, dancers, students, teachers, chefs, religious people and non religious people, Christians, Muslims, writers, actors, white, black, red - it was amazing to read. Another success by Black Inc.
