I have been reading this book with all my classes this week for National Poetry Month and it has just been so much fun. I feel like the more times I read it (I have 20 classes, so it’s 20 times this week!), the more details I notice… like how a line in one verse relates to another. The book is so interconnected and just a beautiful love letter - to teachers, to authors, to students, to poetry.

Jack is in a classroom in which his teacher writes poetry and he has to keep a journal corresponding to various poems his teacher has selected (several of which are included in the back of the book, like Robert Frost, and of course Walter Dean Myers - whose poem Love That Boy, inspired the book). Jack begins not knowing what to write and hating poetry, but through this journaling process, discovers he can write poetry, as well as process difficult things involving a yellow dog, and end up loving poetry, to the extent he writes Myers and asks him to visit the school. So relatable for most students - and adults. All the hearts.
