If Cats Disappeared From The World by Genki Kawamura

dark emotional funny hopeful inspiring reflective relaxing sad

5.0

this book made me so very sad
i bought saw this when i went on a waterstones trip last week having never heard of it before. i read the back, it sounded pretty wholesome but i didn't intend on buying it. then like half an hour later i coulsnt stop thinking about it so i went back and grabbed it
however don't let it fool you like it did me. this was not the lighthearted and wholesome book i thought i was getting into but rather shattered me into little pieces and made me have a little (🤏) crisis

this book goes off the premis of, what would you sacrifice for an extra day of life?
we're introduced to a man who finds out he has a terminal illness and has months to live, until he is visited by the Devil (wearing a Hawaiian shirt btw) who not only tells him he will die tomorrow, but then offers him a deal: he can exchange the existence of something in the world for an extra day of life.
and so that makes the plot of the book; he makes various objects disappear, and views the concequences while reflecting on his life along the way.

this book touches on really broard themes like free will, what it means to be human, love, loss, and the inevitability of death. i found it was really existentialist, more so than i thought it would be, which really touched me and made me think about that for myself which doesnt happen often when im reading
there were some great comedic touches too. the Devil was portrayed in a really humourous light, and my personal favourite, Cabbage (the cat) only knowing how to speak in an old fashioned way.

i really recommend this book. its short, so well written and is all in all a really worth while story :))
