Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan

5.0

This novella had tension in each page and paragraph in a very understated manner. In terms of message and story, it's nothing new - but maybe that's why it's important. The book reminded me of a question that was asked when I went for a concentration camp tour in Germany, about why the residents staying around the camps didn't do anything to stop it. Casting these moral judgements otherises past crimes, and makes it easy for us to live with the wrongs that are happening today -- we still support the corporations that fund war, albeit we are further removed. This book helped me to think more deeply about these ideas, of what happens when the cost of helping outweighs that of keeping the status quo.
