I really enjoyed this book, even though I think I liked it better when there was a chance it was a real memoir. Two notable things about trying to find out how real it was: 1) found out that I wasn't the only one out there who really didn't like Telegraph Avenue and 2) I gave up because I didn't want to find too many spoilers.
Book starts with disclaimer that it's been fictionalized, but then reads like a memoir. Main character is Mike Chabon who is having conversations with his dying grandfather. Grandpa is normally very close-mouthed, but pain killers for the cancer that's eating his body loosen his tongue. In this way, we get the story of his maternal grandparent's life and it's a dandy. Lots of WWII and a fascination with the drive to get to the moon.
