I have mixed feelings about this book. It's a fictionalized story of someone the author knew; he wrote a biography but no publisher would buy it. There's a lot of ableism and sanism, both from characters in the story and from the author himself. At the same time, it's a children's book taking on the brutal history of mental institutions in the early and mid 1900s.
