Hank Green's protagonist in this book is a girl that's more flaws than person, which is equal parts refreshing and frustrating.

The main character's name is April May, a graphic designer who finds a weird statue in NYC and then becomes virally famous for making a video about it before anyone else can.

Turns out the weird statues are everywhere, inexplicably. They can't be destroyed. Strange things happen around them.

She becomes the de facto pundit/mouthpiece about these things, by default.

As she becomes more rich and famous, she becomes more shallow and hollow and caustic to everyone around her.

This book is as much about the impact of becoming a media character as it is about the statues.

Anyway, the book ends very oddly (no spoilers here). I didn't realize that the book was part of a series, so the ending (or, uh, lack thereof) surprised me. I'm really curious to see what book two has to offer.
