I adore this book. I have laughed at books before but this book had me in tears from laughing. The travel narrative part of the book is fascinating and personal. Like most books of this genre, there is a deeper journey going on. McCarthy takes us along as he tries to discover what it means to be of Irish ancestry. While there are many books out there that tackle the similar journey, with varying success, McCarthy's Bar adds another level with his irreverent humor. He lets us into his most random thoughts and, at least for me, I sat there laughing out loud because I could see myself thinking the same thing.
