4.0

I loved this book. Riden is easily in my top 5 romantic interests. A handsome pirate who is also sensitive, mature, and emotionally intelligent? Yes. So much yes. It is so rare to have a male romantic interest see how his trauma is affecting him, set boundaries, and work on himself to get past that trauma. This kind of emotional understanding and growth just isn't shown very often with male leads, and I absolutely loved him for it. And Alosa, well, she's a total badass who somehow manages to be relatable in unrelatable circumstances. She's cute, she's vicious, she's a little dumb when it comes to love. The side characters are pretty well-rounded; I loved the brief descriptions of how different members of the crew came to work for her.
But there are still a few things that keep it from achieving that 5th star.
First of all, the last third of the book wasn't quite as engaging as I wanted it to be. I was a little disappointed in the final battle and its aftermath. There were only 6 pages between the battle ending and the end of the book. I wanted a little bit more time with the rest of the characters, and the last page just felt rushed-- it's not some beautiful or thoughtful or steamy moment that stuck with me. Another complaint I have, which I also mentioned with the first book, is that Alosa's internal dialogue when she's in siren mode feels a bit too robotic and repetitive. Honestly, I just wanted to skim those parts.
Last night I was feeling so in love with this book, I was ready to rate it 5 stars. But I didn't get that feeling much with the last hundred pages or so. Still, it's a cute, quick read. I absolutely recommend this duology!
