The Woods Are Dark
by Richard Laymon
A fast, fun, intense book. The books starts crazy and only gets more insane. What I really liked about this book is that it never felt like it took itself too seriously, it was sort of like The Island in that regard, the stakes are high and there is a huge body count, and some very disturbing imagery. But much like The Island it felt like a book that was just meant to be a guilty pleasure.
One place where the book kind of suffered a little for me personally is that I just kept comparing it to Jack Ketchum's Off Season which is a better book. I guess if you read one book about cannibalistic hillbillies then you feel like you've read them all.
