Within the Mind by Alice Winters
4.0

December 2022. MM romance paranormal mystery about two detectives that use their superpower/gift to see people’s memories to solve crimes, and find themselves in a dangerous hunt for a serial killer who has mind powers of his own.

The mystery of this was fascinating and interesting, I was really riveted to that aspect of it throughout. The paranormal mind powers stuff was explained well enough to follow without dredging into info dumps and info about it as needed (e.g., how common powers are) came up naturally in the course of the story.

The characters and banter were a lot of fun, but I completely understand it being too much or too sexual or immature. I normally love banter and even better if there’s flirting or sexual tension related to it, but it is A LOT.
The two lead characters snark back and forth almost constantly and the love interest is incredibly dramatic and over-the-top and makes tons of sexual comments. There’s a clear mutual attraction that hasn’t been acted on at the start of the story despite working together for years, because the love interest doesn’t do relationships and the main character doesn’t want to get his heart broken by something destined to be casual.

I listened to parts of this as a pick-me-up after listening to parts of the incredibly depressing “The Devil Takes You Home,” so it worked as a nice antidote to lighten the mood. Just as a caution, most of the negative reviews I did see for it (though it’s rated over 4/5 on goodreads) are complaining about it being too snarky or too sexual so it’s not for everyone. I did switch between it and a couple other books because it was A LOT though ultimately I had a blast with it.
Reviews also seem to indicate that while the author is usually heavy on the banter and snark, this one was even more so than normal, so I’m looking forward to checking out her other work and see if a slightly toned down amount of banter and snark is more my speed.

Listened to the audio narration on Scribd. It wasn’t my favorite narrator as he would get a sort of breathy wheezing quality with some voices that were not meant to be decrepit elderly people, I’ve been a bothered by that same quality in other audiobooks by the same narrator in the past. He does an excellent job acting out everything and doing multiple voices, just not my favorite actual voice.
