Starter Villain by John Scalzi

3.0

Entertaining and light-hearted, and I especially loved the mundane parts of the villain business shown (the Zoom call scene was my absolute favorite). The cats’ personalities were on-point and the role they played was so fitting. I liked the commentary on billionaires, greed and other social issues that popped up here and there.

Going with 3 stars just because I didn’t connect with any of the characters. They had a snarky deadpan, comedic way of talking which can be fun but also got tiring when 95% of the dialogue was like that, making all the characters blend together. Charlie was never really written to have any fear or doubt, so as a reader I wasn’t ever “worried” for him, even as he’s dealing with attacks on his life and crazy villains who want him to suffer. Felt like the main purpose of this story was for the author to throw together all of his worldbuilding ideas, rather than focus on storytelling, character development or emotional depth.
