Feminism for the 99%: A Manifesto by Nancy Fraser, Tithi Bhattacharya, Cinzia Arruzza

4.0

An extremely important read for anyone remotely interested in societal change and the dismantling of systemic systems of oppression.

I appreciated the structure of the manifesto, it is short and concise.

Nonetheless, I wish they had included references... maybe that is not the intent with a “manifesto” but some of the statements they make are very strong and would stand taller (in my opinion) if they were backed by evidence. Some statements such as “In comparison with the postwar era, the number of hojrs of waged work per household has skyrocketed...” would be stronger with more of a context, where is that true? All over the world? For whom exactly?

Also, some sentences are too full of jargon leaving the meaning at times unclear: “Today’s exploitation is overlaid wirh expropriation. Refusing to pay the costs of reproducing its own labor force, capital is no longer content to appropriate “only” the surplus value of its workers produce over and above their own means of subsistence.”

I wish some of these jargon heavy senteces were at least accompanied by real life examples. I am sure there are many.

All in all a good and important read, they did a great job in explaining why Feminism for the 99 percent should encompass all other struggles such as fair housing, health, education etc... and why it does not fit into the other two “available” naratives of feminism that are sold to us.
