Case Histories
by Kate Atkinson
I can't remember who recommended this to me. I wish there was way to add a note to the books you place on hold at the library. Maybe they'll add that. They're usually real quick on my suggestions.
This book was very strange in a horrifyingly compelling sort of way. There were four interwoven stories with lots of pain and heartache. There was an unexpected twist at the end: my favorite character, who had murdered her husband, turned out to just be a very easily manipulated perfectionist whose sister had murdered the husband but who had taken the blame anyway. "Michelle, you've ruined both our lives." Poor Michelle, when Shirley was the real wacko.
Amelia was a character that I see often--a middle-aged, unloved, unattractive woman who finds love in the arms of a gorgeous lesbian. What's up with that? She was too unattractive for men, but women will take whatever they can get? Not that I'm not happy for Amelia (she definitely needed some love in her life), I just don't get it. Maybe the newfound confidence from knowing what had happened to her sister and having responsibility over an estate was what made her attractive, and it just so happened that at the time she was in the company of a lady instead of a man.
