The concept of the universe lore is very interesting, but the writing comes across as very rushed and unfinished.
Most of the conflict between the main characters is the "miscommunication trope" in the form of childish sniping, which gets to be pretty grating the third or fourth time they have the same conversation. Romance is not my genre, but I enjoyed Fourth Wing for the fantasy -- Iron Flame definitely is a step down from the first book in pacing, plot and character development. Hopefully the author is given more time to flesh out the universe and better write/edit the next one.
