God: An Anatomy by Francesca Stavrakopoulou
5.0

If you’ve ever been interested in the origins or historical backdrop of religion, and more specifically the Judeo-Christian God of the Bible - then you’ve come to the right place. The author details the anatomy of god, dividing the book by way of body parts to describe the way God was seen, not now, but at the time when the books of the Bible were written.

As a former Christian, it was fascinating to learn more about the historical and geopolitical factors relevant to books of the Bible and the beliefs held by communities at that time. A lot of which is not really explored (in my personal experience) within the spiritual community. Stravakopoulou makes the case for viewing much of the writings and poetry from a literal lens rather than an allegorical lens which often fit the theological beliefs of the religious leaders of their time.

By the end I asked myself - did God create us in his image or did we create him in ours?
