A Children's Bible by Lydia Millet
3.0

I had high hopes for this book. And at about the halfway point, I expected this to possibly be the best fiction I would read this year. The second half seemed rushed, however.

The author, Millet, is clearly a talented writer. There is a lot of symbolism in this book- and I love symbolism. Children are the wisdom-givers - I also love that. I wanted the ending of the book to help me make sense of the story, and I missed it. Perhaps that’s the author’s point. There is no sense to the ending.

This is no happy tale and takes several dark turns. I can see why so many have praised this book.

One quote that stuck with me comes from the young prophet in the story, Jack.

“Heaven’s part of the code. It just means, a good place for us all to live.”
