izarravarela 's review for:
Red Sorghum
by Mo Yan
I couldn't get through this one. I tried, really, but a guy gets skinned alive, and then there's a rape, and then a horrible retributive murder... and then—oh goody!—the Japanese arrive again... and I'm barely a quarter of the way through. The writing is as lurid as you'd expect from Nobel Prize-winning literature, but the subject matter was so off-putting that that there was no saving this one for me.
I'll leave it unrated, as I don't know how many stars to give a powerful book ... that overpowered me as a reader.
