Under the Volcano by Malcolm Lowry

I didn’t expect the prose to be this beautiful - elegant, flowery, almost Shakespearian. The drama is highly Shakespearian too - it seems larger than life, and left me feeling sorrowful for the main character, whom I’ve come to like and pity throughout this lush narrative.

The novel is about how powerless the others are against the monsters that eat at you. It is only in your power, as an individual, to choose life over death, and no one can ever save you.

Philosophical, psychologically astute and blushingly beautiful: just like I like my novels!
