Budayeen Nights by George Alec Effinger, Barbara Hambly

4.0

This book of short stories set in the same era (23rd century Earth) as When Gravity Fails and its two sequels was thoroughly enjoyable. I had read Schrödinger's Kitten in Omni magazine when it was first published, in 1988. However, the story did not make a strong impression on me, even though it clearly impressed the SFWA and the WSFS, winning the Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novelette. Some years later, I read When Gravity Fails and declared it my favorite cyberpunk novel. I didn't learn about the sequels until recently, at the same time that I discovered this collection.

My two favorite things about this book are: 1) the insightful biographical notes written by his ex-wife, and 2) the "original" Budayeen story, The City on the Sand. I still have not read the sequels to When Gravity Fails, but have both of them on my reading list.
