The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires
by Grady Hendrix
If I had to pick one word to describe this book, it would be addictive. Thankfully, I have a virtually limitless amount of words to recount the journey that The Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires took me on!
I would classify this as my second entry into the horror genre. I knew plenty of horror authors (that’s a lie actually. I only knew of Stephen King and Anne Rice. I’ve never bothered with SK novels). I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to get through it since I’m squeamish and don’t like gore. However, this really wasn’t that bad. However, I don’t have much to compare it to in regards to other horror entities.
I really liked a lot of things about the novel. The villain is definitely spooky. They’re manipulative, brutal and make you seethe. Truly, that’s a great villain. Our main gals are intrigued and they’re all different and interesting in their own ways. Our main lady, Patricia, was engaging to follow. Another characteristic this novel touched on was sexism and racism. It wasn’t preachy about it. It was infuriating to walk through and witness. It was meant to be and it worked well.
So what was the wow factor that earned my 5 star review? Truly, it was the fact that I couldn’t put the novel down. Even when the conflict made my teeth grind and I put the book down, I turned right back around and continued not too long after. Not many books permeate my thoughts such as this one did. That earns a wow from me!
All I can say is that if you’re not convinced to go out of your comfort zone then I don’t know what to tell you other than it’s worth it!
