Stasiland: Stories from Behind the Berlin Wall by Anna Funder

dark emotional informative fast-paced

4.0

Anna Funder's account of East Germany in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall carries the reader on a grimly ethereal trip. Funder's account of her time in Berlin and the crumbling remains of the GDR intermingle with the harrowing accounts of those she encounters in a beautiful collection of anecdotes and vingettes. There is no getting away from the oppression of the now defunct Stasi. It hangs over this book like the coal dust over the Berlin sky. Their tendrils constantly pulling at subject, author and reader alike.
