I wanted to wait and review the series as a whole, and I think I can say now that's the best way to consume it. The trilogy is very much about trauma and healing, and it's a continuous journey. The characters and relationships grow so beautifully throughout. Lei is an amazing protagonist and narrator, and there wasn't a single moment where I didn't want to see her story through to the end.
This is a story about sexual assault. The author is very candid about her own experiences and her desire to explore these difficult topics in a sensitive but honest way. It's a feminist story, where the women face a lot of misogyny and lack power, but find their strength in themselves and each other. Despite its dark themes, it does fit into the (upper) YA category it's labelled under.
The characters are amazing. I absolutely adore Lei, and Wren, and their relationship—with all its ups and downs—is beautiful. The other Paper Girls (Aoki, Chenna, Blue) are all unique and so lovable. All the other characters, whether it be friends or family or enemies, are interesting and well fleshed out. (Nitta and Bo, you will always be my favourites.)
The fantasy/mythological elements feel really well built and provide an excellent setting for the power struggle at the centre of this story. You aren't so much given an information 'dump' as a good explanation at the beginning of the Paper, Steel, and Moon castes. Everything else is explained and developed as it comes, like the shamans and the Xia and the like, and all of it is fascinating.
This is a story that just feels really important, while still being an interesting, fun, heartwarming, heartbreaking read. I think everyone should read these books and gain a little understanding of what so many women go through, and what so many overcome.
