Watership Down by Richard Adams

This book rules - we read it shortly after finishing LOTR and I think they make interesting companion pieces. It is both surprising and unsurprising that this book is so popular and such a classic. The premise is really so weird: it's about rabbits, but it's not cutesy, it's kind of violent and dramatic and maybe even a bit preachy and allegorical. And yet, it just works. It feels very singular, and it's got unexpected depths. It feels like something you should have to discover yourself deep in the archives of the library somewhere, yet instead it's an international bestseller. Respect to the nerdy parent who wrote this for his daughters and with the help of his weird naturalist friend and somehow made something so undeniable.
