The Haunting of Velkwood by Gwendolyn Kiste

adventurous dark emotional mysterious reflective fast-paced

5.0

This book took me by surprise. I normally shy away from super scary stories, even though I love paranormal themes, and this was spooky - but I enjoyed it immensely. The setup is so interesting- a haunted neighborhood with whole families left behind as ghosts. The Velkwood Vicinity has been the center of paranormal activity and research for the last twenty years. Ever since three childhood friends, Talitha, Brett and Grace escaped a traumatic event that started it all.

The mystery had my attention, the book was emotional at times for Talitha, having to see her little sister as a ghost. All the ghost elements were so well done, the neighborhood disintegrating, building up this time clock, that we’re running out of time, had me in suspense. It was very visual for me and the atmosphere was fantastic.

I really liked all the characters, Talitha and Brett’s connection, even after all these years, was undeniable. As a small trigger warning, there’s an undertone of parental abuse that carries throughout, which strengthens the connection between these women, then and now. I appreciate that this book got straight to the point, it was fast paced but in a way that still embellished and set up the world nicely. I’m curious to check out more from this author in the future!

Thank you to Saga Press for the free copy of this book, this is my honest review.
