Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

5.0

Reading this book made me forget that I was in fact reading a book. I was more like a character in the story, eagerly anticipating what was going to happen next. At its very core, Zott is a perfectly-made character. While some parts were haplessly added to fit the typical "destiny" trappings, the sentience of it is for the reader's enjoyment.

Rather than using alternate flashbacks, the scene breaks allowed for tighter pacing. The humor, however, was what really stood out. It made for a more satisfying read, and I lost track of how many times I laughed out loud.

Lessons in Chemistry is a delightful, smart, hilarious, and warmhearted novel that is not even tedious. Above all, it imparts a powerful message. Given the overall lighthearted and humorous tone of the book, the depiction of misogyny and gender discrimination was not overtly serious and profound but is nonetheless impactful. One of the best books of the year if not the best.
