The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman
by Angela Carter
I bought an omnibus novel of Carter's works and this was the second book of the three. I enjoyed the Magic Toybox, but this one I just wasn't impressed. The story is unique and disturbing at times, there appears to be a theme that humanity's base desires are cruel, misogynistic and sadistic/masochistic and that all desire wells from a bestial-like sexuality. At least that is as far as I was willing to think about it. Images are sharp and disturbing, although the language was archaic, cold and dehumanizing - a bit pseudo-intellectual.
Reading this novel reminded me of university - we'd be assigned some post-modern avant garde literature project that was interesting but cold and barely readable. For the purposes of literary discourse this is a fine book, but for pure enjoyment it ranks low.
I would have liked to study this novel in school, but these days reading time is rare and I'd like to fill it with novels that pull me into the story not leave me cold and disturbed.
