Prophet Song by Paul Lynch

Did not finish book. Stopped at 28%.
There was a lot of things lacking that means this one just didn’t suit my preferences as a reader.

It really lacks a sense of place, which was particularly disappointing as it’s Irish setting was part of what drew me to Prophet Song to begin with.

The prose style is quite detached which makes it lack in emotion, or the type of rich inner life of the main character that I’d expect in a slower-paced literary dystopian. I also think we fall into a bit of a “men writing women” thing here, where Eilish doesn’t really feel like a whole woman / mother with a vivid inner life.

Disappointing, as I usually love books like this, but Prophet Song is really bringing nothing new to the scene. I’d much sooner recommend Yoko Ogawa’s The Memory Police
