Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott

emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring lighthearted fast-paced

"Writing is about learning to pay attention and to communicate what is going on. Now, if you ask me, what's going on is that we're all up to here in it, and probably the most important thing is that we not yell at one another. Writing involves seeing people suffer and as Robert Stone once put it, finding some meaning therein. But you cant do that if you're not respectful." - Anne Lamott from Bird by Bird.

My first read of May started with a five starrer non fiction! My friend Snigs gifted me this book and I couldn't have asked for a better gift :)

Unlike another writing book that I read, written by a famous author, Anne doesn't tell you to stop writing. She does tell you that getting published is not the only end goal of writing. And that writing is like meditating - it helps you and the people you share it with, in more ways than one. It is actually therapeutic. So that's why you should write. Also, to get published and rich. But mostly, for therapy and to spread love. But also to get rich.

Her writing style and dark humour was right up my alley so I absolutely loved reading it.

The book is split into five parts - Writing, The Writing Frame of Mind, Help Along the Way, Publication and Other Reasons to Write, The Last Class.

Each chapter contains a lot of usable advice that I'm surely going to try to implement in my own writing. Have you read this book? What is one book on writing or on life that inspired you a lot?
