Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh
5.0

Usually a novel that takes me more than two weeks to get through is a sign that I like the book less than I did this one. But in this case, "Sea of Poppies" just had the misfortune of entering my life in a busy period. While it took the first hundred pages or so to get all the major characters straight, I was fully sucked in after that. Which meant my repeated interruptions were pretty frustrating.

In any case, "Sea" is historic fiction that focuses on several people in India whose lives are entangled with the British controlled opium trade in the 1830s, just before the outbreak of the first Opium War. It's the first book in a trilogy, which means that I now have to hunt down the next book "River of Smoke" to find out what happens next. And, the third book isn't even out yet. Cue that frustration again.
