Hunted by Meagan Spooner
5.0

I loved this version of the tale. Beauty is a forward, aggressive, hunting main character, and I love her for it. She's not into hunting because it's the opposite of sewing and being "feminine", she loves hunting because she just does, because it speaks to her, because it's something more, and I think it's wonderful.

I thought the interspersions of the Beast's point of view were well done. It took me a while to realize why they were formatted the way they are, but there definitely a few really good tugs on the heart strings while reading his POV.

The romance developed slowly, which was nice—Beauty and the Beast become friends first. I'm a lover of the Beauty and the Beast retelling, so I wasn't looking for any instances of Stockholm Syndrome (I wonder if anyone has done a B&B retelling with someone aware of what Stockholm Syndrome is. It would be an interesting take on it.)

I read this book right after the [b:The Bear and the Nightingale|25489134|The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy, #1)|Katherine Arden|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1470731420s/25489134.jpg|45268929], which was problematic, because Arden delves really deeply into Russian culture and Spooner doesn't. If it wasn't for that, I would have passed over the Americanisms in this adaptation without an issue. As it was, I came from a book with a Russian glossary at the back to a book where Beauty calls her father "Daddy". Eh.

Overall, a great book. Very enjoyable. One of my favorite Beauty and the Beast retellings.
