katmystery 's review for:
A Conspiracy of Kings
by Megan Whalen Turner
Ooh, this was a hard one.
I love the characters and the series- it's gold in the fantasy genre of today- but this book was tiny, tiny flakes of gold in muddy water. It didn't work.
The plot was too vague.
Every few chapters, I would have an 'aha!' moment and think I understood the plot, but then that wasn't the plot. Now that I've finished it, I understand that it was one of those ambiguous character-development plots, but even those plots can be made clear.
The plot was too watered down to be identifiable, and that was infuriating. For mystery books, you want the reader to be a little irritated, but the mystery should be the elusive part, not the plot itself.
In conclusion, I love the series, but I was disappointed with this one. Then again, I have to remember that this isn't one of those series where you're in it for the story. This one is all about the characters. And, though some of the books are slow, it's still a good series, because those characters are still there.
