A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham
2.0

I have a few issues with this book. I have been wanting to read it for awhile because I greatly enjoy thrillers, and the summary caught my attention. I mean, this is a book about a convicted killer's daughter being face-to-face with murders that imitate his own from 20 years ago. It sounded exciting.

My issues start with the pacing. This is a thriller and I found myself struggling to get through it. It certainly did not thrill me. The author does an amazing job of describing emotions and settings, but there were TOO many descriptions. Sometimes I just wanted to read one simple statement instead of a twelve sentence paragraph that virtually said the same thing.

Next, I didn't want to dislike Daniel, but the author made it very difficult to see why Chloe wanted to marry him. He throws her a surprise party knowing her past and she hates surprises. He chokes her while they're making love, knowing that is how her father killed his victims. He sends someone to her house to install a security system, which he thinks she wants because she's so scared, WITHOUT TELLING HER. Also, he hides nearly every detail of his past from her from the way he grew up to what happened to his sister. For someone who has always been so cautious, it doesn't make sense for her to agree to marry him so early in their relationship.

Finally, at one point in the book, she's remembering her father's defense attorney coming to tell her mother that Dick is going to take a plea deal, and in exchange for it, no death penalty, but her father has to tell the police where the bodies are. Yet, he doesn't and there was no mention of him being on death row. Not sure if that was a plot hole or if I just missed something.
