I understand what it was trying to do and there were a few things here and there that I liked, especially in part 2 of the book. But mostly I hated the main character and I didn't care at all. I could also feel the coloniser racist mindset bleed through and I'm sorry but I just don't care about what white French  people were getting up to in Algeria nor their perspectives. Also what pissed me off was that this guy didn't see the point in being anything other than indifferent or unmoved by things but he also actively made very questionable decisions abiding by oppressive principles
